action

John Reilly wakes up in an African hospital with a serious head injury and struggles to remember his name - the rest of his life is in the dark. Not even fully recovered, he is soon subjected to interrogation by officer Mugambe, who accuses him of belonging to the CIA . This brings up isolated memories in Reilly, but they only remain fragmentary and make no sense. He is not allowed to leave the clinic until further notice. Any attempt to escape will be severely punished.

Vince, who pretends to be a comrade of his, visits him at the hospital and tells about their mutual past in the military . John's job was to infiltrate Al-Wasir, a terrorist network . Since the troops had no news of Reilly's whereabouts for two weeks, the Al Wasir camp was bombed by air raid . Hence John's head injury. Vince also shows a persistent interest in the whereabouts of a nuclear detonator.

In his now clearer memories, a certain Birani appears. John requests a meeting with that wealthy businessman, hoping for information that will help clarify his identity . The US ambassador organized a meeting for John with Birani in the clinic's garden. Birani keeps a low profile, but reveals to him that Reilly's family was killed by Allied forces and that Mugambe and the CIA are working together to find the leader of Al-Wasir and neutralize it. Birani smuggled some of his people into the clinic as staff or patients who later helped John Reilly to escape.

Some time later, Reilly meets with Birani for coffee in an Arab country . Birani is also very interested in the nuclear detonators, but since Reilly can't get any information, Birani puts an anesthetic in his coffee. John wakes up in the hospital in which he had recovered, with the difference that there is no longer a soul in the building. In a previously non-existent side wing, he meets all the protagonists of the past few weeks, this time in US clothing style, clean and well-groomed. They congratulate him on the successful completion of a project, and Vince then explains: The building is on a military base in Kuwait . John's family was actually killed, but not by Allied forces, but by a bomb attack by the Al-Wasir terrorist network. Its leader, Al-Wasir, who always covered his face in public, was then captured in Beirut and executed.

John's grief over the death of his family would not go away. He agreed to take part in a brainwashing program using drugs to ultimately assume the identity of the terrorist Al-Wasir. The action served, among other things, to erase the memories of his family and thus to get over the painful loss. However, John Reilly's final words are: "I do not forget and I do not forgive."

criticism

“When it comes to adapting an interesting idea, director and screenwriter Amir Mann prefers sobering storylines instead of lively, winding sections. The result is a tiring film that only really appeals in the last few minutes, and which in no way does justice to the high expectations despite the low budget. "

- Bjorn Backes

"Good performance and various surprises in a brittle, not always convincing production."

- Video.de editorial team

“Peter Bogdanovich in a supporting role, that sounds interesting, but unfortunately it is being given away. Because the film unfortunately trips itself up by using too many clichés that are simply unnecessary. Torturing, sweating colored people who look evil and do evil - free. But that hardly happens during the whole film other than questioning, torture, speeches, half-hearted escape attempts and everything all over again, that is very tiring. In return, the actors are mostly credible and play motivated. The optics of cameraman Ben Kutchins also manages to create an almost feverish atmosphere. "

- Renatus Töpke

"" The Fifth Patient "is an exciting, brutal and inhumane thriller, the specialty of which is its chamber play-like staging. With color, masterful camera work and wonderful actors, Amir Mann creates a gripping work. Darkness, blood, yellow-green dirty walls - any color is left out - reflect the misery of the prisoner, literally make one feel the smell of the run-down clinic. An exciting thriller about a corrupt military regime in which humanity no longer has a place. "

- Cinefacts editorial team

"An average, moderately exciting psychological thriller [...]"
