Forte da Casa is a locality and former municipality in Portugal . Its fortifications from the early 19th century, to which a museum is dedicated, are known.

history

As commander in chief of the Portuguese-British defense against the Napoleonic invasions , the British general Arthur Wellesley , who later became the Duke of Wellington, had a line of 152 fortresses built in 1810, the lines of Torres Vedras . In the area of ​​the later municipality of Forte da Casa were some of these fortresses, which belonged to the second fortress ring of the lines of Torres Vedras. A larger fortress as garrison was doing with the Reduit da Serra da Albueira Reduto built. The responsible major Brandão de Sousa gave the garrison fortress the name Forte Da Caza (German for house fortress ). The present-day place developed from this fort.

The village belonged to the municipality of Vialonga until it became an independent municipality in the district of Vila Franca de Xira on July 12, 1985. On June 30, 1989 Forte da Casa was elevated to a small town ( Vila ).

In the course of the administrative reorganization in Portugal in 2013, the municipality of Forte da Casa was merged with the municipality of Póvoa de Santa Iria to form the new municipality of União de Freguesias de Póvoa de Santa Iria e Forte da Casa . The headquarters of the new municipality became Póvoa de Santa Iria.
