Póvoa de Santa Iria is a city and former municipality in Portugal . It is located on the Tejo , not far from the capital Lisbon .

On the banks of the Tagus near Póvoa de Santa Iria

history

The village goes back to the 1336 demarcated lands of the Morgado da Póvoa by the owner D. Vicente Afonso Valente , a senior canon of the Lisbon Cathedral . The center of the estate was the Quinta da Piedade estate , which was run by Valentes' brother Lourenço Afonso Valente. Through succession, the lands came into the possession of changing noble families during the following epochs. The importance of the productive lands increased steadily, especially due to the proximity to the capital and the location on the Tagus River.

The arrival of the railway in 1856, the later Linha do Norte , represented a significant development boost . In addition to the agricultural goods, the salt and limestone extracted here could now also be transported quickly and easily from the neighboring communities. The establishment of the first fertilizer factory in 1859 was followed by the Companhia de Moagens de Santa Iria industrial grain mill in 1877 and, a little later, the Sóda Póvoa factory, now part of the Solvay Group. The population continues to grow.

As a result, the independent municipality of Póvoa de Santa Iria was created on April 13, 1916, by splitting off from the municipality of Santa Iria de Azóia . It remained a parish of the Loures district until November 8, 1926, when it was assigned to the Vila Franca de Xira district.

Due to the proximity to the rapidly growing capital, the residential population also grew in Póvoa de Santa Iria, and the settlement of industrial and commercial companies continued to increase, especially since the 1960s. On September 24, 1985 Póvoa de Santa Iria was elevated to a small town ( Vila ) before it became a city ( Cidade ) on June 24, 1999 .
