Afonso Duarte

Afonso Duarte (born January 1, 1884 in Ereira , Montemor-o-Velho district , † March 5, 1958 in Coimbra ) was a Portuguese poet and author.

Life

Afonso Duarte was born in Ereira, a small village of river fishermen and small farmers. He attended primary school in Alfarelos and high school (Liceu) in Coimbra, where he studied at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Coimbra (at that time as Ciencias físicas e naturais part of the then faculty of philosophy). In 1914 he became a teacher in Vila Real and he published his first volume of poetry.

In 1917 he briefly became a teacher in Lisbon before he was drafted as an officer in the coastal artillery after Portugal entered the First World War . Due to a serious illness, he was paralyzed and declared unfit. He never fully recovered from the paralysis. He took on managerial positions at various schools in Coimbra until his early retirement in 1932.

He then published a number of volumes of poetry and collections of traditional stories. In 1956 he was publicly honored in Ereira and a memorial stone with verses by him was placed in the castle of Montemor-o-Velho.

Afonso Duarte died in Coimbra in 1958. He was buried in the Ereira cemetery. A collection of poems compiled by Carlos de Oliveira and João José Cochofel was published in 1960 , and a last book was published in 1974, again a compilation of previous poems and stories.

reception

Duarte was interested in the topics of farmers and the traditions and stories that have been handed down. Despite the strong influence of Saudosism at the beginning, Duarte's work cannot be attributed to any direction alone, but has changed over the course of time. He enjoyed the admiration of other writers in Portugal, including Miguel Torga and Carlos de Oliveira.

In Ereira, a small museum with a library was set up in his honor in the house where he was born, and the town's main street now bears his name. In other places in Portugal, too, streets were named after him.

The city of Montemor-o-Velho awards a literary prize with his name, and in the Park Penedo da Saudade in Coimbra there is a bronze bust of him, created in 2001 by the artist Francisco Simões .
