history

The Casa do Torreão (center) from the 16th century, home of the French architect Jean de Rouen / João de Ruão (approx. 1500–1580)

Traces of human settlement go back to the Iron Age , as is particularly well documented at the nearby Santa Olaia site . Known as Erariüm during the times of Roman occupation, evidence of individual finds is sparse, as well as from the time of the Moorish occupation. Only with the Reconquista and the founding of the independent Kingdom of Portugal can more informative documents be found about the place, which was long in the contested border area to the displaced Moors. The surrounding fertile soils made settlement easier to secure the area that was finally conquered in 1064. The area changed its church owners several times and was at times the subject of disputes between them.

As a result of the Liberal Revolution in Portugal in 1822, a large number of private owners and smallholders became landowners for the first time, and a relative economic boom began.

Ereira was already mentioned in the foral of King Manuel I , with which he confirmed the town charter of Montemor-o-Velho in 1513, as part of the district (concelho) Montemor. Ereira was since then part of the parish (freguesia) of S.Martinho until it became part of Verride in 1844. On December 31, 1984, the place had success with its decades-long efforts to form its own community, and not to belong to Verride .
