history

The parish church in Santo Varão

The finds from Roman times from Formoselha can be seen today in the archaeological museum Museu Municipal Santos Rocha in Figueira da Foz. The place was first documented as Fermozelha in 915.

King D. Manuel I gave some privileges to Fermoseli in 1503 . In addition, he renewed the town charter of Montemor-o-Velhos, and in the town charter also a town of Sanverão was first mentioned, today's Santo Varão. However, while Formoselha belonged to the Margravine Marquesa de Castro Forte , Santo Varão and Arazede belonged to the Bishop of Coimbra.

In the course of the various administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution of 1822 , Santo Varão became the seat of an independent district in 1836 with the communities of Pereira do Campo , Santo Varão, Granja do Ulmeiro , Alfarelos and Figueiró do Campo . The district was dissolved in 1853, and since then Santo Varão has been a municipality in the Montemor-o-Velho district.
