Seixo de Gatões is a town and municipality in Portugal .
history
Not much is known about the origins and early history. Possibly the place was a Roman settlement, based on the etymological origin of the place name Seixo von Saxum . In the course of the settlement policy after the Reconquista , the now uninhabited and overgrown area was repopulated and made arable from the 12th century. In a document dated August 29, 1451, the place Seixo is noted as a village of the Vila (district and small town) Montemor-o-Velho. In 1936 the independent municipality Gatões was formed by splitting off from the municipality of Seixo, and at the same time Seixos was renamed Seixo de Gatões.
