Tentúgal is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Montemor-o-Velho . It has 2,141 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). It is known nationwide for the Pastel de Tentúgal , a filled puff pastry dessert.
geography
The community is located on the right bank of the Mondego , about 10 km west of the district town of Montemor-o-Velho and east of the district capital Coimbra .
history
The place was officially mentioned for the first time in 980, and until the 11th century was alternately under Christian and Islamic rule. In 1034 Gonçalo Trastamires took Tentúgal definitively from the Moors during the conquest of Montemor. The area became part of the newly created county of Coimbra , which was ruled from 1064 by D.Sisnando ( Sesnando Davides , 963-1091), who came from Tentúgal.
In 1108 the place received city rights ( Foral ) for the first time , which were confirmed by Queen D. Tereza in 1124 . In 1265 the town of Póvoa de Santa Cristina also received city rights. In 1420 King D. João I gave the area to his son, D. Pedro , who lived here for a time and for whom his father created the title Duke of Coimbra .
In 1515 King Manuel I renewed the town charter of Tentúgal, which remained the seat of an independent district (concelho) until 1853. Since then it has belonged to the Montemor-o-Velho district. In 1991 Tentúgal was elevated to Vila (small town).
