Isla Isabel is an island in the Pacific Ocean and is located about 30 km off the Mexican coast. It is administered as part of the Municipio Santiago Ixcuintla ( state of Nayarit ).

history

The island was discovered in 1836 by Abel Aubert Dupetit-Thouars .

By government decree in 1980, the island was declared a national park, administered by the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the National Institute of Ecology .

geography

The area is 82.16  hectares , the entire national park 194.17 hectares.

The island reaches a height of 85 m in the Cerro del Mirador in the west of the island. This is followed by Cerro de los Pelícanos and Monte de los Gatos in the east, with 75 and 70 meters respectively. Monte Transverso (65 meters) and Cerro del Faro (40 meters) follow in the south.

It is of volcanic origin, ash cones and crater remains shape the landscape. Despite its small size, there is an almost circular inland lake on the island, around 200 m in diameter. There are numerous rocks in front of the bay-rich coast, two particularly striking ones off the east coast are called Las Monas (The Monkeys).
The volcanic rocks that make up the island are essentially alkaline basalts and tephras , such as those found on other Mexican volcanic islands . Little is known about the age of the volcanic rock. The relatively fresh morphology of the island, such as B. a recent looking, bare lava flow in the northwest of the island, and a geochemical evidence point to an activity until the Holocene .

Noteworthy are u. a. the large populations of various birds, such as the frigate bird and various types of gannets . Parts of the island are covered with guano . Marine mammals (dolphins, baleen whales) are often seen around the island.

Demographics

There is no official settlement on the island. At times researchers, fishermen and tourists live on the island.
