Duke of Coimbra
The title Duke of Coimbra was created by King John I of Portugal in 1415 for his second son, Pedro. Together with the title Duke of Viseu , which was awarded around the same time, the Duke title of Coimbra is the oldest in the country. The line died out again with Pedro's son. However, the title was reassigned at the end of the 15th century to Jorge de Lencastre, an illegitimate son of King John II of Portugal "ad personam" (i.e. without hereditary property). The descendants of Jorge are the dukes of Aveiro .
