Granja do Ulmeiro is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Soure .
history
At the main church of the village, Roman graves and objects have been found in an archaeological site, which prove Roman settlement. There are also indications of a Roman road that ran over a stone bridge at today's train station and crossed the Rio Munda , today's Mondego .
The place was probably founded in the times after D.Afonso Henriques , when the land conquered in the course of the Reconquista was colonized by Christians. The name "Granja do Ulmeiro" means "barn of the elm grove " or "farm of the elm grove". It is said that there were elm-covered land here on which farmers were settled and which was later assigned to the Order of the Knights of Christ .
Granja do Ulmeiro has long been part of the district ("concelho") of Santo Varão . When the district was dissolved on July 24, 1853 , the parish came to the Montemor-o-Velho district and has belonged to the Soure district since December 31, 1853 .
In the middle of the 19th century, in the course of the construction of the railway during the construction of the Alfarelos station and its maintenance facilities, relocations and reorganizations were carried out in the village, which has since experienced an increase in population.
Attractions
The main church ("Igreja Matriz") is an extension of the original church of Infante D. Henrique ( Heinrich the Navigator ) from the 15th century , which was dedicated to the Archangel Gabriel . The gilded altarpiece from the 17th century has two Solomonic columns and various representations and figures, e.g. T. from the 16th century. In front of it is a decorated stone altar from the second half of the 18th century. In the church you can find the stone depiction of the defeat of the dragon by St. George and that of the mantle division of St. Martin, both from the 17th century. In the chapel on the right, a painted wooden retable from the second half of the 17th century shows St. Michael and above the Holy Virgin with other depictions of saints.
