Alberta von Freydorf (born Albertine Freiin von Cornberg; born February 19, 1846 in Paris , † November 8, 1923 in Karlsruhe ) was a German writer .

Life

Alberta (actually Albertine; as a writer she called herself Alberta) von Freydorf was born in Paris in 1846 as the third child of Otto Karl Wilhelm Joseph Freiherr von Cornberg and the actress Wilhelmine Thoene. She came from the old Cornberg family from the Electorate of Hesse and grew up in Karlsruhe since 1851, where her mother got a permanent position at the court theater . She attended the secondary school for girls and the private school Boisot; she spent the years 1859 to 1862 in the Sacré-Cœur monastery near Kinzigheim in Alsace .

In 1866 she completed a three-month traineeship at the Hoftheater Stuttgart . On November 6th of the same year she married the Baden state official and later Minister Rudolf von Freydorf, 27 years her senior . From this marriage two sons emerged (Eugen, 1867–1914, and Rudolf, born 1868). Freydorf's duties of representation as a politician's wife contributed to making her the center of a Karlsruhe circle of artists. She was friends with the mother of Joseph Victor von Scheffels , Josephine Scheffel ; after the death of her husband the poet also took over the guardianship of the two sons.

Since the death of her husband in 1882, she began to become more active as a writer, probably also to supplement her narrow widow's pension. She wrote numerous short stories , fairy tales , novels and (occasional) poems - some of them together with or as successor to Josefine Scheffel - many of which appeared in newspapers, magazines and calendars. Her first book Rhodopis was published in 1885. Biographies of Grand Duke Friedrich and Empress Augusta also emerged from their relationships with the Baden court. She also wrote festivals and organized live pictures .

Alberta von Freydorf died in 1923 at the age of 78. During her lifetime she enjoyed relatively great popularity, but her work was quickly forgotten. Her estate is now in the Baden State Library .
