history

The local government ( Junta de Freguesia ) in Alfarelos

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1231 under the name Alfarelas , (in German: subsection). It is not known whether the name can be traced back to the presence of the Arabs at the time . Settlement during antiquity can be proven by underground passages and an old Roman road.

With the renewal of the city rights ( Foral ) for Montemor-o-Velho , King Manuel I also confirmed that Alfarelos belonged to the Montemor-o-Velho district. In 1880 the parish became part of the county of Soure. In April 1928 the place was raised to a Vila (small town).
