history

Entrance sign to the community

Finds in the municipal area prove a settlement back to the Neolithic . Later, Romans lived here , as finds from the 4th century show. In 1825 a number of corresponding coins and altar remains were found, about which Emil Hübner later published. A project to excavate Villa Madanela , a local villa rustica , has been applied for since 2009 and is in preparation.

The first official mention of today's Samuel comes from a document from 1258 . It had been an independent municipality since the 16th century at the latest. Samuel belonged to the Seiça monastery and formed an administrative unit at that time ( Reguengo , similar to a today's district) together with Urmar , until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the following Miguelistenkrieg . Then it was affiliated to the district ( concelho ) Abrunheira . In the meantime it became an independent district, only to be finally assigned to the Soure district in 1853 .

Geography and landmarks

The parish consists of various small towns, its center consists only of a church, parish hall and cemetery. The parish church Igreja Paroquial de Samuel (after its patron saint also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Purificação , German: Our Lady of Purification) is a listed building. It was built in the 16th century and is known for the depiction of the devil on one of its altars. Sun visited Fernando Ribeiro , lead singer of international heavy metal band known Moonspell , and the fado singer Cuca Roseta the church together for this reason, during a photo report by the county Soure for the Up magazine of the airline TAP Portugal .

In the village of Urmar, a Roman bridge has been preserved alongside a stone cross from the early 16th century. You can also see the partially renovated ruins of the former thermal baths of Amieira, Bicanhos and Azenha with their surrounding conifer , deciduous and eucalyptus trees in the border area to the municipality of Alqueidão .

The four-star Palace Hotel & Spa Termas do Bicanho opened in 2015

There are a few smaller industrial companies, including wood processing. Agriculture continues to be a factor in the local economy. The not-for-profit Associação Cultural, Recreativa e Social de Samuel ( ACRSS ) has also become an important driver , which runs geriatric care facilities, a music school and a kindergarten, offers certified professional training courses and organizes cultural events in its facilities in Coles. After the FAPSUR textile factory closed in the mid-2000s, the ACRSS is the municipality's most important employer.

The thermal baths of Amieira, Azenha and Bicanho were important economic factors of the community at the beginning of the 20th century, which one would like to reactivate today, also as a source of renewable energies . It all started with the Termas da Azenha thermal bath, which has been continuously restored by Dutch emigrants in private initiative since 2000, with guest rooms, holiday apartments, restaurants and wellness offers. Since opening in 2015, the four-star Palace Hotel & Spa Termas do Bicanho, with its 136 rooms and extensive gastronomic, wellness and thermal facilities, has become an essential factor in the renewed tourism and health tourism at the mineral springs.
