Entrance (coming from Samuel)

Urmar is a village in the Portuguese parish ( Freguesia ) of Samuel , in the district ( concelho ) of Soure .

history

Romans lived in the Urmar area . A Roman road ran here, a bridge of which has been preserved. According to unconfirmed assumptions, there was a castle in Urmar since the early Middle Ages, which is said to have been converted into a monastery by the monks of the Santa Cruz Monastery in Coimbra, where it is said to have been the victim of an Arab attack during the Reconquista in 1190 . In the vicinity of Urmar there are not yet qualified remains of a castle or fortress, which could possibly have been the aforementioned monastery.

The Urmar stone cross built in 1520

Urmar became the seat of its own district in the Middle Ages. The stone cross of the village that can be seen today was, according to presumptions, formed from the original stake of the village, which was erected in 1520 as a sign of its city rights . Urmar then increasingly lost importance in favor of Samuel. In the course of the various administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , the Urmar district was dissolved and, together with the Verride and Samuel districts , which were also dissolved, it was incorporated into the Abrunheira district, whose seat was later moved to Verride, before it was also dissolved in 1853 and to Montemor-o-Velho and Soure was split.
