Abrunheira is a village and a municipality in the Portuguese region of Centro .

history

Local finds such as fibulae and ceramic objects prove the prehistoric and Roman settlement. The Roman past is also documented by the exchange of land between the Seiça monastery and the church superiors of the Igreja de Santa Maria da Alcáçova from 1139 , who call the Latin name Rebelles of Roman origin. In the newly organized administrative rights (Foral) by King Manuel at the beginning of the 16th century, the town of Revelles was already mentioned , with 150 inhabitants. Abrunheira itself is listed for the first time in the cadastre from 1527 as Brunheiro (see also under "Name"). It was the seat of its own district from 1836 to 1844 and was then assigned to the Verride district . The entire district came to Montemor-o-Velho when it was dissolved in 1853 .

On March 8, 1928 , the previously independent municipality Reveles was dissolved and merged with Abrunheira.

Surname

The name Abrunheira comes from Abrunho , the Portuguese name of blackthorn (Latin Prunus spinosa). The name has changed steadily over the years, with the historical variants Brunhedo, Brunhido, Benuinhedo, Bruinheira, Bruinhedo and Brunheiro.

Abrunheira is the seat of a municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( Concelho ) of Montemor-o-Velho, in the Coimbra district . On June 30, 2011 the community had 636 inhabitants on an area of ​​11.9 km².

In the course of the local reorganization of Portugal after the local elections on September 29, 2013, the municipality of Abrunheira was merged with the municipalities of Vila Nova da Barca and Verride to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Abrunheira, Verride e Vila Nova da Barca . Abrunheira became the seat of the new community.
