history

The Romans built roads here during their occupation. In November 1186 the place received administrative rights (Foral), which were renewed in the course of administrative renewals under King Manuel I on August 23, 1514 . In 1832 the place was an independent district ( concelho ), which belonged to the then administrative district (comarca) of Figueira da Foz . With the creation of the district of Abrunheira in 1836 , the district of Verride was dissolved and Abrunheira was incorporated. In 1844 Verride was raised to a small town ( Vila ) and briefly again the seat of an independent district, in order to finally become a municipality of the district of Montemor-o-Velho from 1853 .

The ruined monastery of Verride

The Mannerist - Baroque church was built in the 16th century . Around the same time, the neoclassical Renaissance monastery of Verride ( Convento de Almiara or Mosteiro de Verride ) was built. It was built by the monks of the Order of the Holy Cross on a plot of land above the Mondego, which was sold to them by the Santana Monastery in 1285 . They introduced rice cultivation, which is still widespread in the area around Mondego.

On June 13, 1808 , the Associação Filarmónica União Verridense was founded. The "Philharmonic Association" still exists today and is one of the oldest still existing musical associations in the country. With the music school and its two orchestras, it is an important factor in the community's cultural operations.

The municipality's thermal springs ( Bulho, Brulho, Brolho and Barulho ) were renovated as thermal baths in 1865 , but have since been abandoned and dilapidated.

administration

Verride was the seat of a municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( Concelho ) of Montemor-o-Velho , in the Coimbra district . On June 30, 2011 the community had 612 inhabitants on an area of 5.5 km².

The parish consisted only of the village of Verride.

In the course of the local reorganization of Portugal after the local elections on September 29, 2013, the municipality of Verride was merged with Abrunheira and Vila Nova da Barca to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Abrunheira, Verride e Vila Nova da Barca . The seat of the new municipality was officially Abrunheira, but the municipal administration resides de facto in the larger premises in Verride.

community

The community has a cultural center, a full football field, a multi-purpose hall, a health post and facilities for the elderly. A preschool and a primary school are on site. The Portuguese Red Cross has a local delegation and there is a sports club and a cultural club.

The community maintains smaller community gardens and a small excursion park with a barbecue area and viewing platform ("Outeiro da Moura").

The parish festivals are the Festa de São Sebastião (Saint Sebastian) on January 20th and the Festa de Mártir Santo (Holy Martyr) on January 24th .

The former post office

economy

There are smaller industrial companies (plastics, construction, fish processing) and a few smaller shops and cafés , plus a pharmacy. Agriculture and river fishing continue to be a significant part of the local economy, mostly sideline. The local branch of CTT Correios de Portugal (Post Office) ceased its counter service at the end of the 1990s, and CP no longer operates counter and freight services at the train station either. The residents mostly earn their living with old-age pensions or gainful employment in the surrounding cities (Coimbra, Figueira da Foz).
