Asima Chatterjee
Asima Chatterjee (born September 23, 1917 in Calcutta , † November 22, 2006 in Calcutta) was an Indian chemist.
Life
After finishing school in Calcutta, Asima Chatterjee studied chemistry at the University of Calcutta and graduated. She did her PhD in 1944 with Prafulla Kumar Bose and Satyendranath Bose . In Wisconsin she was a post-doctoral student in 1947/48, in 1948/49 with László Zechmeister at the California Institute of Technology , in 1949/50 with Paul Karrer at the University of Zurich . In addition, she was also active in teaching from 1940 in Calcutta, where she also became a professor in 1962.
She mainly researched alkaloids , polyphenols and terpenoids . Her work on alkaloids of the genera Kopsia , serpentine and periwinkle has received international attention. She has received many awards.
