João de Ruão , in France Jean de Rouen (* 1480 or 1500 probably in Rouen ; † 1580 probably in Coimbra ) was a French - Portuguese architect and sculptor of the Renaissance and Mannerism .

He is the father of the architect Jerónimo de Ruão (1530 in Coimbra; † 1601 in Lisbon), one of the builders of the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon ( UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 ).

A large number of his altarpieces and sculptures can be seen in the National Museum Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro in Coimbra.

Life

The son of the architect and sculptor in the French Rouen same name came at the invitation of King D. Manuel I of Portugal . His work in the parish church of Atalaia (1528) is considered the first work in Portugal .

He married Isabel Pires, sister-in-law of the Mannerist painter Cristóvão de Figueiredo († 1543), and settled in Coimbra. Here he worked on a variety of buildings, such as the Santa Cruz Monastery , the Capela dos Reis Magos and the old Sé Velha Cathedral .

He also worked as an architect and sculptor in a number of other places, such as the Cathedral of Guarda (approx. 1555), and in Viseu , Braga , Tomar and Óbidos , but mainly in Coimbra and the surrounding areas (Montemor-o- Velho, Tentúgal, Cantanhede, Góis, Soure and others).

He lived for a while in Ereira near Montemor-o-Velho , where his house and studio (Casa do Torreão) have been preserved, and died in 1580, probably in Coimbra.
