location

history

The diocese of Egitânia (today Idanha-a-Velha ), which has existed since the 6th century, was founded in 1199 at the request of King Sanchos I by Pope Innocent III. moved to Guarda. In the period that followed, a Romanesque previous building was demolished and a successor was built, which, however, was also demolished towards the end of the 14th century at the instigation of King Fernando I (ruled 1385–1433) because of the reinforcement of the city wall . Today's cathedral was built - roughly at the same time as the Batalha monastery - from 1390 at the instigation of Bishop Vasco de Lamego after the battle of Aljubarrota (1385), which was victorious for the Portuguese . It was completed in 1517.

architecture

The three-aisled Gothic church building is basilical and has a transept . The vestibule is by buttresses stabilized, whereas the nave also buttresses with vertical loads features. Two small octagonal west towers protrude outwards from the facade. Inside, the three naves are spanned by rounded ribbed vaults. The last columns of the two-storey central nave in elevation consist of twisted services ; Similar forms of the Manueline style can also be found on the spatially cramped west portal and on the high window of the north portal.

Furnishing

In 1898, the architect Rosendo Carvalheira had all furnishings from the 17th to 19th centuries removed from the cathedral. The renaissance- style altarpiece by João de Ruão (around 1555) with its numerous figures deserves special attention .
