Life

Mohammed Mrabet was born in the Rif Mountains as one of 23 siblings, first went to a Koran school and then to a state school. He spent his childhood and youth in Tangier, where he worked as a fisherman, hotel worker and bartender. After meeting Paul and Jane Bowles in 1956, Paul Bowles began translating Mrabet's tales, which he recorded on tape, into English. The illiterate Mrabet became one of the internationally best known Moroccan authors through his stories. Mrabet's paintings are also popular with collectors.
