Amand Vanderhagen (also Amand Haegen or Amand van der Hagen ; * 1753 in Antwerp , † July 1822 in Paris ) was a Flemish clarinetist , basset horn player , conductor , composer and music teacher .

Life

Vanderhagen began his musical career at the age of 10 as a chorister at the Cathedral of Our Lady in his hometown. He then received lessons from his uncle A. Vanderhagen, who was an oboist in the music corps of Prince Karl Alexander of Lorraine in Brussels , and composition lessons from Pieter van Maldere . In 1785 he settled in Paris, where he became principal clarinetist in the Royal Guard's band and had already composed several military marches. In 1788 he became the conductor of this music corps. After the French Revolution in 1789, Bernard Sarrette accepted him as one of 45 musicians in the music corps of the Paris National Guard and was also a lecturer at the military music academy in Paris. After stints in the chapel of the Guards of the Directory in 1798 and the Guards of the Consuls , he became sub-bandmaster of the grenadiers of the Imperial Guard . After the Prussian campaign in 1806/07, Napoleon awarded him the Legion of Honor. At the end of the first Empire in 1815 he joined the orchestra of the National Theater (in the Théatre Feydeau) as a clarinetist , where he remained until his death.

Musical creation

As a composer, Vanderhagen left behind numerous arrangements of opera arias, suites, marches, dances and potpourris for wind orchestra, two flute concerts, two clarinet concerts, duets for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, etc.

Vanderhagen is better known for his educational work, namely teaching works for flute, oboe and clarinet as well as individual treatises. With the clarinet he laid the foundations of modern playing technique, even if the clarinet with 5 keys on which he was based was soon replaced by the instrument with 6 keys.
