The 1956 season was the 36th season of the Primera División de Costa Rica , the highest Costa Rican soccer league. Eight teams took part. Ultimately, the season was not played, but in 1999 it was finally decided to include the season as the 36th season in the statistics.

The previous season lasted almost until the summer of 1956, after which the clubs could not agree on a calendar with FEDEFUTBOL (Costa Rican Football Association). It was ultimately decided to wait until January 1957 to start a new season. In 1999, with the founding of the UNAFUT (league operating company, comparable to the DFL in Germany), the decision was made to specify the 1956 season as the 36th season, instead of the champion, simply desierto (canceled).
