SG Española

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sociedad Gimnástica Española de San José , often shortened to SG Española or SGE , is a former football club from San José , Costa Rica . Because of their traditionally red dress, the team was also known by the nickname Diablos Rojos (German: Red Devil ).

history

The SGE was founded on June 11, 1911 and was a founding member of the Primera División de Costa Rica introduced in 1921 .

Both in the opening season 1921 and in the later seasons of 1928 , 1930 , 1933 , 1937 , 1938 and 1942 , the team was runner-up. In addition, she reached the cup final four times (1934, 1944, 1945 and 1949), but was only the “second winner” here. The fact that the SGE was often second, but never won a title at national level, earned it the additional nickname Eterno subcampeón (Eng. Eternal runner-up ).

At the end of the 1961 season , the first division adventure of the Diablos Rojos ended , who crashed into the Tercera División in the next few years. There they won the championship of Región 7, Filial de San José in the 1972/73 and 1974/75 seasons .

After the club later came to a standstill, the entrepreneur Ceferino Casero started a project in 2006 to revive the traditional club.
