Straeten is a district of the municipality of Heinsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia in the administrative district of Cologne .

Street village

Straeten falls in the narrow zone of street villages on the lower Rur , which tapers east-northeast from Sittard to Mönchengladbach . A whole line of street villages even begins with Straeten: Straeten, Scheifendahl, Aphoven, Lieck, Högden, Lümbach and Vinn. Here the streets, which are mostly in furrows, move the houses one or two lines together, so that the village on one side or in the middle has the character of a street village, while on the other side or at the end the courtyards are further apart.

It is the same with streets, which extend for a length of 3 km in an S-shape along an old dry valley in a partly single-row, partly two-row row of houses over the main terrace. In earlier times the area was a dense forest and heather area.

history

The finds of flint axes in the vicinity of Straeten suggest that people were present at least occasionally in prehistoric times. In Roman times there was an approximately halfway between Straeten and Uetterath in a square of approx. 200 m (including a piece of pillars and shards from the 2nd and 3rd centuries) documented settlement. A sesterce of Emperor Antonius II Mark-Aurel and two Roman vessels of unknown age were found in Straeten itself.

With regard to the reclamation and settlement of the area on the Roman road Aachen - Geilenkirchen - Roermond, a time frame of between 750 and 900 is assumed. In two documents from the Carolingian period (779) the hamlets uualdarit and uualdario are listed, which are located in the diocese of Liège . It has not yet been determined whether this is the place Waldenrath (neighboring town of Straeten).

The name Straeten, which is derived from " strata " = street , speaks for the Roman road Aachen - Roermond, which is said to have led via Straeten - Hatterath . The " Oeker Weg " on the west side of the village is a reminder of this. Part of this path is called " et Stroetsche " - today the Roman road.

The name Straeten is mentioned in a document in 1409. In this document, a Goswin von der Straeten is referred to as the aldermen of the Dingstock Hagbank vor der Hagen. The judicial rights lay with the Lords of Heinsberg , the office of lay judges was bound to certain courts. One of these courtyards was the Kapitel or Straetener Hof. It was owned by the Heinsberg lords, then owned by the monastery dean Wilhelm von Blankenberg (1379–1382), and later owned by Eberhard von Elsum.

The history of the Kapitel- or Straetener Hof gives some insights into the period from 1500 to 1900.
