Walter Dahn
Walter Dahn (born October 8, 1954 in St. Tönis ) is a German painter , photographer and sound artist . He is one of the most important representatives of the Junge Wilde of the 1980s. Dahn teaches painting at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig .
Life
From 1971 to 1979 Dahn studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy where he was a master student of Joseph Beuys . His first works were drawings and installations in room 19 of the academy. In his work, the focus was particularly on drawing, photography and the creation of videos and Super 8 films. From 1979 to 1982 he was a member of the Mülheimer Freiheit artist group , which also included Hans Peter Adamski , Peter Bömmels , Jiří Georg Dokoupil , Gerard Kever and Gerhard Naschberger . The young artists shared a backyard studio in the “Mülheimer Freiheit” street in Cologne, which leads to the Rhine.
His breakthrough came with an exhibition in the gatehouse gallery “When the guinea fowl weeps softly”. In 1981 he was represented in the exhibition of the Rundschau Deutschland . From 1981 he published sound carriers under the project names "The Party", "The Hornets" and "# 9 Dream". In 1982 Dahn exhibited some of his works at documenta 7 in Kassel . In 1983 and 1984, together with Dokoupil, he was given a teaching position at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Since 1996 he has held a professorship at the Braunschweig University of Art . Until 1984 he created joint pictures with Dokoupil. In the same year he took part in the exhibition From Here - Two Months of New German Art in Düsseldorf . In 2003/2004 his work was shown at Obsessive Painting - A Review of the New Wild in Karlsruhe.
Walter Dahn lives and works in Cologne .
Representations and motifs
Walter Dahn's motifs initially consist of figurative representations or metamorphoses. This is how deformed human figures often arise in the course of further development. Furthermore, his painting is characterized by spontaneity and a reduction to the essentials and thus shows similarities to the works of Beuys. Recurring themes in his works are helpless, naked people or dream and wishful ideas, for example the return to or into nature as well as human longings and fears.
