The Städtische Galerie Delmenhorst is one of the nationally respected, internationally active art institutions in northwest Germany.

history

It is since 1974 in Bremen by architect Heinz Stoffregen (1879-1929) for the factory doctor of Nordwolle , housed Sanitätsrat Hermann Coburg (1861-1934) in 1905 in Art Nouveau villa built forms. The private gallery "pro arte" was opened in the villa since 1961. In 1973 the house was sold to the city of Delmenhorst. From 1974 Hans Stephan was the first director of the now Städtische Galerie Delmenhorst. An exhibition by Otto and Christian Modersohn took place in 1985.

Under the direction of Barbara Alms , the house was rebuilt and expanded in 1998 to include the "Stuckenberg Collection" art museum, which presents classic modernism around the Sturm artist Fritz Stuckenberg . A museum collection was built.

Solo and group exhibitions are held in the museum.

Since then, the art museum has had three main collections of classical modernism: 1. the core holdings are the works of the Sturm artist Fritz Stuckenberg (1881–1944), 2. graphic works by artists such as Archipenko , Campendonk , Feininger , Itten , Kandinsky , Kirchner , Klee , Kupka , August Macke , Franz Marc , Kurt Schwitters a . a. 3. Graphic works of French modernism by Cézanne , Bernard , Pierre Bonnard , Denis , Robert Delaunay , Dufy , Maillol , Utrillo , Suzanne Valadon and others. a. Thematic exhibitions on contemporary art dealt with media changes (“You are in real time of your life!”, 1998), the transformation processes of the contemporary city (2002) and drawing today (2004). A cycle of exhibitions thematized various aspects of realism in contemporary painting and the tendencies towards the return of romantic and classical aesthetics. The year 2006 was devoted exclusively to photography (“Year of Photography”). At the beginning of 2007, a temporary children's museum (“Kinder-Coburg”) was opened under the auspices of UNICEF . The Städtische Galerie returned to Fritz Stuckenberg in October 2007 with an exhibition entitled “Paris Glows”, which addressed his stay (1907–1912) in the then art capital and the revolutionary art developments of the glamorous epoch of modernism. Since 2008 exhibitions of the painting classes of the North German art academies have taken place regularly. The art museum now also has a collection of contemporary drawings.

In the summer of 2010, Barbara Alms gave up the management of the Städtische Galerie; her successor is Annett Reckert (previously curator of the Kunsthalle Göppingen ).
