They do what they want (Bulgarian: Те правят каквото им харесва ) was an art exhibition in Sofia , Bulgaria . It took place between November 24th and December 12th 1986 in the gallery of the Association of Bulgarian Artists and was subtitled “Young Rhenish Art”.

A catalog was published for the exhibition in Bulgarian, with an accompanying brochure in German.

The exhibition project represented a risk and can only be explained against the background of perestroika, which also began in Bulgaria at this time : it showed an art at the most renowned exhibition location in Bulgaria at the time that was still regarded as ostracized or at least questionable. For example, B. a work by Jiří Georg Dokoupil a burning five-star (!).

Participants included Charly Banana, Walter Dahn , Jiri Dokoupil , Felix Droese , Leiko Ikemura , Christa Näher and Rosemarie Trockel .
