life and work

Chihiro Shimotani was born in Japan in 1934 and graduated from the Kyoto Municipal Art School in 1961 . In 1988 Shimotani was visiting professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , from 1992 to 1995 and from 1999 to 2005 he taught at the summer academy in Neuburg an der Donau , from 1997 to 1998 at the International Summer Academy for fine arts, Salzburg. Chihiro Shimotani lives and works in the Japanese city of Sakurai.

Materials that Shimotani uses to produce his works are often from nature. Stone, wood, metal, paper gold, earth, wax, plants, snow, ice and water. He often prints, mills or embosses words into them. Word, writing, time and transience are themes of his artistic work.

With the work “Vocalize”, Shimotani took up a poem by Arthur Rimbaud (1854–1891) in 2008 , in which the vowels are assigned colors and properties. So A means black, E white, I red, U green and O blue. Shimotani milled some formulations from Rimbaud's poem into colored metal plates and transformed them into picture-text panels. The works of Mishima Yukio and those of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke also offered Shimotani starting points for visual works.
