In 1927 the first Roman Catholic emergency church St. Franziskus was built on Wielandstrasse in Krefeld in just one year. The church space could hold 750 worshipers. During the Second World War , the wooden church was destroyed in an air raid on June 22, 1943.

A second church was built in 1948. It soon became too small for the growing number of believers.

In 1959 the construction of today's church building began. The new church was completed after a year and consecrated on November 27, 1960. The design by the architect Stefan Leuer ( Cologne ) is special: the church building is a central building with an equilateral cross as a floor plan. In this shape of four intersecting circles that form a clover leaf, the building has excellent acoustics. The church was renovated in 1976 and 1990.

On May 23, 2016, the St. Francis Church was acquired by the Russian Orthodox community. Central structures in the shape of a cross are very common in orthodox church construction. The church was, u. a. by installing an iconostasis , transformed into an orthodox church and rededicated in honor of the holy great martyr Barbara . The great consecration was carried out on October 13, 2018 by Bishop Tichon , the administrator of the Berlin diocese.

The apse was decorated with an icon painting ( fresco ) and consecrated by Bishop Tichon on July 7, 2019 .

Furnishing

A special feature are the 226 stained glass windows, which give the room a special lighting atmosphere.

The bell tower stands as a campanile separated from the church, which is also often found in the Eastern countries of Orthodoxy. The five bronze bells (dfgab) are equipped with counter pendulums to reduce vibration, the largest bell weighs 1.75 t.
