Myn Bala - Warriors of the Steppe ( Kazakh Жаужүрек мың бала , Schauschürek myng bala ) is a 2011 Kazakh historical drama directed by Akan Satajew . The film was shot on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan's independence and shows the resistance of the Kazakhs against the oppression by the Djungarian empire during the time of the "Great Disaster" .

The film was submitted as a Kazakh nomination for the 2013 Academy Awards in the category of best foreign language film , but received no nomination.

In the 18th century penetrate Zungars before in the vastness of the Kazakh steppe and oppress its people. Sartai's parents perish. Sartai vows to fight for the future of the people together with Taimas. Over time, the two of them gather together many men and women who want to fight the Djungars. The previously disagreed Kazakhs finally go into battle together and defeat the invaders.

Reviews

On filmosophie.com, the presentation of the dynamics between the main characters Sartay and Taimas is praised - at the beginning they are still inseparable, but later they become alienated and hostile. The “grandiose landscape shots” and the representation of the “many cultural peculiarities” are also emphasized.
