location

The 74,500 m² Fichtenhain campus is located in the southwest of the Krefeld district of Fischeln . Surrounded to the west, north and east by the Europark Fichtenhain industrial park, the campus is directly adjacent to the A 44 and the city of Willich in the south .

history

The Fichtenhain campus was designed around 1905 as the first “Rhenish Provincial Welfare Educational Institution” for difficult-to-educate boys. At the beginning of the 20th century, girls and boys were brought up separately from one another - accordingly, an educational institution for the more difficult cases among the girls was established parallel to the Krefeld facility in Mönchengladbach in the Nordpark . The facilities were extremely advanced in terms of architecture and urban development and were characterized by a close connection between living and working. The Krefeld institution was divided into three parts: the actual educational institution, the main estate and the Höffgeshof farm. The former consisted of the administration building, the pupil houses A to D, a kitchen with a ballroom, a laundry room with bathing facilities, a workshop building, a boiler and machine house, a porter's house and a hospital. The laundry room building was not just a kind of laundromat from the imperial era, it also included a small swimming pool.

The area, which has largely retained its basic concept in its individual buildings, reveals the original social care approach at a glance. Mostly two-story brick buildings are grouped around a central green area. The buildings show the inspiration of the builders of the time. In the 1930s the facility was temporarily rededicated. It was initially used as a training camp for the SA and in the years shortly before and during the Second World War it was used as a location for Wehrmacht staffs and Army Group B.

Present and Future

In 1997, the property company of the city of Krefeld mbH & Co. KG, at that time still a subsidiary of the Krefelder Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft, acquired the entire area from the Rhineland Regional Council with the long-term goal of converting it into an industrial park for office use. The Landschaftsverband Rheinland is currently still based on the Fichtenhain campus with a living group and a workshop. At the same time, the first companies from the creative services sector have settled. The buildings are under monument protection. The Fichtenhain campus was recognized as a model project for sustainable industrial park development by the Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Agriculture, Nature and Consumer Protection of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .
