The Ferrowohlen AG is a Swiss company in the steel industry . Starting in 1955, it manufactured products for reinforcement in an ironworks in Wohlen in the canton of Aargau by melting down old steel . At times, Ferrowohlen employed around 400 people. In 1994 production had to be stopped. Since then, the company has dedicated itself to the maintenance and continued use of the factory premises.

history

Second factory hall, built in 1987/88

The straw industry dominated economic activity in Wohlen until the middle of the 20th century , but then quickly lost its importance. In order to create a balance, the Wohler municipal assembly voted on June 22, 1955 with over 90% approval for the establishment of an ironworks. At the end of the same year, the Ferrowohlen started operations in a 320 meter long hall, which is partly in the area of the neighboring municipality of Villmergen . At the height of development around 1970, the company employed around 400 people.

In the 1980s, Ferrowohlen planned to expand production. In 1987/88 she had a second hall over 300 meters long built. However, due to global overcapacities in the wake of the steel crisis , the rolling mill that had already been purchased and installed was never put into operation. The collapse of the European steel market, combined with a massive drop in prices, led to major losses from 1992 onwards. In February 1994 production had to be stopped. The manufacturing facilities were dismantled in 2003, sold to Iran and rebuilt there.

The company planned a profound conversion of the factory premises and developed the Ferropolis project , which was presented in August 2003. By converting the factory halls and building new buildings, a new district was to be created on the 200,000 m² site. The project envisaged an investment volume of 600 million francs ; In the final stage, Ferropolis would have offered space for 3,000 jobs and living space for 3,000 people. In the course of the participation process in spring 2007, the authorities, parties, organizations and individuals involved expressed major concerns and criticized the project as being oversized. The sudden increase in population would also have required a considerable expansion of the local infrastructure and caused a massive increase in traffic. The idea of layering the slag on the site along the railway line as a noise barrier instead of disposing of it met with little understanding .

Based on the feedback, the realization of the project seemed unlikely. The board of directors of Ferrowohlen therefore decided in May 2007 to change strategy. The zoning of the area from the industrial zone into a mixed residential and commercial zone, which would have required a referendum in the affected municipalities of Wohlen and Villmergen, was waived. Instead, the two halls are actively managed and rented out to subsequent users as a production facility and warehouse. After the renovation of part of the older factory hall, which cost seven million francs, the first companies moved in in 2009, including the logistics center of the electronics retailer Digitec Galaxus . The site is to be gradually expanded into an industrial park.

Around half of the total area has already been built over and has various storage and production halls. The company is now building the new halls D3 and D4 as well as an underground parking garage with 120 parking spaces for its new tenant. The two new buildings will be realized by Eiffage Suisse (Zurich office) as general contractor for the client Ferrowohlen AG.
