Globi
Globi is the most successful Swiss children's book character. He is a kind of parrot-person with a blue body, yellow beak, beret and red and black checked trousers. Globi appears in picture books, comics , non-fiction books for children, radio plays and in a film.
history
On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the Swiss department store company Globus was looking for an advertising medium for children. The reason for the creation of the Globi stories was then the female panther that escaped from the Zurich zoo on October 11, 1933. The then head of advertising at the company, Ignatius Karl Schiele, and the illustrator Robert Lips decided to publish the story of the runaway panther as a picture story with the title Globi on a panther hunt . The story appeared as a six-part series in the NZZ and other Zurich daily newspapers and was given away as a special edition. In 1935, 8000 copies of “Globis Weltreise” appeared, the first real Globi book with texts by Alfred Bruggmann . The original suggestion to name the character Kimbukku was not well received by the Globus branch manager in Basel. Since the people of Basel called the globe “Gloobi”, they came across Globi.
The special thing about the Globi volumes is their textualization in verse form (pair rhyme):
"The zoo design once tended
to be extremely fatal in cages:
the quarters
for the animal on display were usually too narrow !"
Globi Verlag AG has published Globi since 1944. The millionth Globi book was sold as early as 1948. In 1950 Globi was translated into various languages and the books were published in Holland , Brazil and Belgium . However, there was no success in Latin Switzerland or abroad. The cabaret artist Fredi Bruggmann set numerous Globi books to music as cassettes.
In terms of content and form, the first 46 Globi volumes can be compared to comic strips : They are loosely connected episodes that each end with a punchline. In the 1940s and 1950s, critics saw Globi as a disrespectful, flashy person and characterized the volumes as trash . Regardless of this, thousands of children were members of the Globi clubs that were founded in 1936.
Globi Verlag AG also publishes Papa Moll's picture stories from 1975 onwards . In the same year Robert Lips died, whereupon the new volumes essentially consisted of summaries or new texts of old volumes.
In 1980 Peter Heinzer took on the task of drawing the new Globi stories. His first volume was Globi in the Wild West . The structure of the new books differed from those of Lips, because Heinzer told a coherent story in each volume instead of just individual episodes or pranks. Globi not only lived in dreamland, but also got to know dream jobs in the various volumes: he became a fireman , Rega helicopter pilot and mail carrier and he even experienced the story of Wilhelm Tell first hand .
At the same time, Lips' old volumes came under fire: racism , sexism and violence were the allegations. As a result, some books have been revised, for example, in more recent editions of Globis Weltreise, all stories set in black Africa are missing . The Globi books weren't the only ones to face this criticism. Cartoon characters from the first half of the 20th century, especially Tintin and Struppi , had to struggle with similar problems.
In 2003, Globi, the last volume with drawings by Heinzer, was published. Since then, a team of authors and illustrators has taken on the task of bringing out at least one large Globi volume every year. At the same time, old volumes are also being reissued. Guido Strebel, who wrote Heinzer's books, said later that his work had received far too little appreciation, since he had saved the publisher with the popular stories.
Globi Verlag AG has belonged to Orell Füssli Verlag since January 1, 2007, but Globi books are still available in Globus branches.
To date, 88 illustrated books have been published, which have appeared regularly on bestseller lists over several generations . To date, over 9 million books have been sold.
In 2005 the Globi film Globi and the Shadow Robber came to the cinemas, which was heavily criticized because of its anime-like drawing style and a Globi-untypical plot. The title song was contributed by the Swiss band Lunik .
Some of the books are also available in French and English .
Globi today
The classic series is now drawn exclusively by Heiri Schmid from Wuppenau ; Stories and verses come from Jürg Lendenmann from Zurich. As the audience has become more critical, the history must be planned more carefully. Globi is portrayed as a loyal rail customer, firefighter, seafarer, boy scout, guard of the national park , hotelier, man for all cases and much more.
In addition to the so-called Globi Classic volumes, there have been other series with Globi since 2000. In the series “Globi - Lern mit Grips”, learning booklets on arithmetic, writing, logical thinking, foreign languages and German are published. The “Globi Hobby” series is devoted to topics such as cooking, gardening, etc. The “Globi Wissen” series dealt with diving, first aid, technology and water; In 2018, the twelfth volume in this series was published under the title “Globi und die Demokratie”. The illustrator Daniel Müller draws for the Hobby and Knowledge series, and Samuel Glättli for Globi and Democracy . Different authors oversee the content and texts. Katja Alves worked on first aid with Globi, Globi's big dessert book and other titles, and Hubert Bächler took on the subjects of technology and water. Globi Verlag mostly works with experts and institutions for non-fiction books.
A new Globi book appears every year, and possibly a non-fiction book. In some cases, old, very popular classical titles are also being reissued. If necessary, they will be rewritten. In addition to books and radio plays, Globi adorns a variety of NonBook products such as watches, pajamas, underwear, T-shirts, cutlery, dishes, wooden toys and much more.
Globi's narrator in the radio plays and in the film is Walter Andreas Müller , and the Globi songs and other music in the radio plays have been written by Alexius Tschallener since 2004.
The original form of Globi (a plaster figure about 20 cm high) is now in the Vitznau Regional Museum . The client at the time for this figure was Globusdirektor Zimmermann, a Vitznauer. Emergency lighting with Globi is installed in isolated school buildings.
