The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart ( Engl. Sacred Heart Cathedral ) is a Roman Catholic Church in Davenport , Iowa , USA . It is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Davenport .

history

The parish was founded in 1856 by Mathias Loras, Bishop of Dubuque. When in 1881 the Diocese of Davenport emerged from the cession of territory by the Diocese of Dubuque , the building was raised to the cathedral of the new diocese. In order to do justice to the growth in Davenport, the previous building was replaced by the current cathedral. Construction of the Sacred Heart Cathedral began in 1889 and was completed in 1891. The architect was James Egan from Chicago. The consecration took place on November 15, 1891 by Bishop Henry Cosgrove. On April 5, 1984, the cathedral was listed as a monument on the National Register of Historic Places .

The organ was built in 1991 by the Noack Organ Company. The instrument has 35 stops on two manual works and a pedal . The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric.
