The former widow's palace in Plön

The ducal widow's palace in Plön in Schleswig-Holstein was the widow's seat of the Duchess Dorothea Christine . During its history, the building also served as an orphanage and was rebuilt several times. Today it houses the district museum of the Plön district , which was founded in 1955.

historical overview

The later widow's palace emerged from an aristocratic court of the Middle Ages , which was first attested to around 1385 and served as a castle loan from the nearby Plön Castle . The original building was renovated around 1540 and served as an orphanage under the Plön dukes from 1685 onwards. From 1756 it became the widow's residence for Dorothea Christine , the mother of Duke Friedrich Karl , and in the 19th century the palace housed the court pharmacy. The building has housed the district museum of the Plön district since the 20th century.

The barrel-vaulted basement of the palace dates back to 1540, after which the building was expanded and rebuilt several times. Further changes to the structure were made in 1639 and 1685, and the building was largely given its current baroque shape around 1756, although the front was redesigned in a classicist manner around 1842 . The palace is a two-storey building under a high mansard roof . The nine-axis building shows a plastered facade in the direction of the city, the other facades are exposed to brick. The interior is shaped by the redesign of the 19th century, but the rococo ballroom from 1756, which faces the garden, was retained on the upper floor .
