Dean Constantine Sturridge (born July 26, 1973 in Birmingham ) is a former English football player . The striker denied much of his playing career with Derby County ; his nephew Daniel Sturridge is also a professional footballer.

Athletic career

Sturridge went through the youth department of Derby County and played the first competitive game (0-1) for the second division on January 11, 1992 against Southend United . In the following years, the young striker established himself further in the regular formation, also gained more match practice in December 1994 at the fourth-rate loan club Torquay United and was then an important factor with 20 goals in the 1995/96 season that Derby County made the Premier League for the first time rise. He was also successful in the English elite class with eleven league goals in the 1996/97 season and was partly responsible for the secure relegation - one of the goals was a particularly spectacular hit against Arsenal . He played 4½ years for the "Rams" in the Premier League and scored 32 championship goals during this time.

In January 2001, Sturridge moved for £ 375,000 to league rivals Leicester City , where he had significantly less success. Especially after Ade Akinbiyi's commitment for five million pounds, his place in the team was seriously endangered. In November 2001, the "Foxes" loaned him to the second division club Wolverhampton Wanderers . The debut at the "Wolves" was extremely impressive with four goals in the first two games and on Christmas 2001 the parties agreed on a permanent transfer for 350,000 pounds. His sporting high continued and with 21 competitive matches Sturridge was his club's best scorer in the 2001/02 season. The following year he contributed eleven more goals and was able to celebrate the second first division promotion in his career at the end. However, the Wolves' 2003/04 Premier League season was not a good star; the injury-ridden Sturridge came in just five games and was loaned to Sheffield United in the middle of the season. Even after his return to Wolverhampton Sturridge failed to build on past performances and regain a regular place and moved in March 2005 to the Queens Park Rangers on a free transfer .

In London it became more apparent that Sturridge's professional career was drawing to a close. In the eleven missions for the "Hoops" he remained without his own hit and in December 2005 the club announced the premature end of the short interlude. At the end of June 2006, the attacker tried again with the lower-class Kidderminster Harriers , where he only completed six games off the field despite the widespread recognition by the coach for supporting the players and received no new contract after the end of the 2006/07 season.
