Marcus Sorg (born December 24, 1965 in Ulm ) is a former German soccer player and current coach . Since March 2016 he has been the assistant coach of the German national team .

Player career

In his youth, Sorg began playing football at TSG Söflingen before moving to SSV Ulm 1846 at the age of 12 in 1977 . When Ulm was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1984/85 season, the offensive player was called up seven times, with his first goal in the professional field on May 18, 1985. In the 2-3 home defeat against MSV Duisburg , he scored the goal to make it 3-1. After relegation he stayed in Ulm and was able to celebrate the immediate resurgence. At the side of his strike partner Uwe Spies and the dynamic midfielder Dieter Kohnle , he made a decisive contribution to reaching the top spot in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg with 14 goals this season .

In 1986/87 he played 27 times in the 2nd Bundesliga, again he scored a goal of the season. After the season, Sorg did not get a new contract and he switched to the amateurs of VfB Stuttgart , where he also began studying engineering. At the University of Applied Sciences in Stuttgart, he completed a degree in basic and building physics , which he successfully completed with the academic degree of Dipl.-Ing. (FH) graduated in building physics .

In 1988 he was relegated with the VfB amateurs from the amateur league, and in 1991 he was promoted again. From 1993 he was active for the league competitor TSF Ditzingen , with whom he qualified in 1994 for the newly introduced Regionalliga Süd . In 1996 he moved within the regional league for one year to VfR Mannheim , in 1997 he returned to Ditzingen for two more seasons and ended his playing career in 1999.

Coaching career

In the summer of 1999, Sorg started working as a trainer. He looked after the amateurs of the Stuttgarter Kickers and was at the same time assistant coach for the first team. With the second team he rose in 2000 to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg. In December of that year he passed the A-trainer license exam. When the second team of the Stuttgarter Kickers had a bad start to the season under head coach Rainer Zobel in the summer of 2001 , Zobel was fired on August 26th and replaced by Sorg. As a result, the team that was traded as a promotion aspirant was in the lower midfield of the table again. On March 9, 2003, Sorg was given a leave of absence after a 5-0 defeat by the amateurs of FC Bayern Munich , Rainer Adrion was his successor .

On January 1, 2004, Sorg was introduced as the new coach at TSF Ditzingen, where he used to play himself. The former regional league team worried about staying up in the Württemberg League . Sorg managed to keep the class with the team towards the end of the season. In the summer of 2004 he moved a league higher when he signed with Heidenheimer SB ; the club had previously been promoted to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg. Sorg stayed here for only five months, since at the end of November he signed a contract as a coach with his home club and league rival SSV Ulm 1846. With the club he played for promotion to the third division, which was narrowly missed several times. Although his contract with the SSV was valid until 2008, he was released on September 4, 2007 and replaced by Paul Sauter .

Sc freiburg

In the summer of 2008, Sorg began to work as a coach and scout for the U17 team at SC Freiburg . At the beginning of 2009, from the winter break, Sorg took over the training of the second team of SC Freiburg, which played in the Regionalliga Süd . He was the successor to Karsten Neitzel , who had moved to Japan as Volker Finke's assistant . Together with assistant coach Uwe Staib , he led the team to a non-relegation place until the end of the season. In the following season he intervened with her temporarily in the promotion race to the 3rd division and finished the season as third in the table behind the promoted VfR Aalen and the second representative of 1. FC Nürnberg . Players like Oliver Baumann , Daniel Williams or Daniel Caligiuri were introduced to the club's first team under Sorg.

On March 21, 2011, SC Freiburg announced that as of July 1, 2011, Sorg would become the head coach of the Bundesliga team. He succeeded Robin Dutt , who moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen with his assistant coach Damir Burić and goalkeeping coach Marco Langner in the 2011/12 season . Sorg was assisted by the previous U19 coach Christian Streich , who was also Dutt's assistant coach. On December 29, 2011, the sports club separated from Sorg after the club was bottom of the table with only 13 points in 17 games after the first half of the season.

FC Bayern Munich

In the 2012/13 season, Sorg took over the FC Bayern Munich U17 team, replacing Stephan Beckenbauer .

German Football Association

Since the 2013/14 season he was responsible for the German U19 national team . With the selection he won the U19 European Championship in Hungary at the end of July 2014 . In 2016 it was initially planned that he would lead the U19s during the European Championships in Germany before he was to succeed Horst Hrubesch in the U21 national team . Instead, Guido Streichsbier took over the U19s for the summer tournament, while, at the suggestion of Hansi Flick , Sorg became the second assistant coach of the senior national team under Joachim Löw for the upcoming European Championship in France from March 18, 2016 . Löw liked Sorg's work there so much that he finally stayed on the coaching team after the tournament to act as a permanent link to the DFB's junior division. Stefan Kuntz took his place as U21 coach .

On June 8, 2019, Sorg coached the national team in the European Championship qualifier in Belarus for the first time as head coach, as Löw was absent due to illness. Germany won 2-0. In the following game against Estonia, Sorg was temporarily head coach; it ended 8-0 for Germany.
