Juan Fernando Arango Sáenz , Juan Arango for short (born May 16, 1980 in Maracay ), is a Venezuelan former football player who has also had Spanish nationality since March 2007 .

Club career

Beginnings in Venezuela and career in Mexico

As a professional player he had his first appearances at the Venezuelan second division club Nueva Cádiz FC at the age of 17 in 1997. With his team he rose under the new name Zulianos FC in the following season. From Zulianos FC he went on to FC Caracas , where he only stayed for six months.

In 2000 he took the leap abroad with the move to the Mexican club CF Monterrey . Since he was able to prevail there, he went to the top club CF Pachuca , where he scored 16 goals in 52 games. But it didn't last long there either and he went to Puebla FC .

Change to Europe

RCD Mallorca

The big leap in his career and with it great fame he achieved with his move to Spain , where he signed a long-term contract with RCD Mallorca in 2004 . Here, too, he was able to show that he is an extremely dangerous midfielder. Arango is also known for his goals from a long distance, such as in the 2006/07 season in the home game against UD Levante , in which he overcame the opposing goalkeeper from 35 meters or on December 9, 2012, where he played on the 16th matchday of the Bundesliga scored a goal from around 45 meters against 1. FSV Mainz 05 , which was later voted goal of the month .

Borussia Monchengladbach

In July 2009, Arango signed a contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach that ran until 2012, where he was wearing the number 18 on his back. Arango extended his contract early in February 2012 to 2014.

At Borussia, Arango quickly became a central figure in midfield thanks to his free-kick goals . Under coach Lucien Favre he formed a quartet with Marco Reus , Mike Hanke and Patrick Herrmann , which made Borussia Mönchengladbach from almost relegated to Champions League qualifier in the 2011/2012 season . In the 2012/2013 season, Arango was one of the team's top performers. His goal on November 8, 2012 in the second leg against Olympique Marseille to 2-2 final was one reason that the team could reach the round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League . At the end of the 2013/14 season, Arango left the club.

Return to Mexico

For the 2014/15 season Arango moved to the Mexican Liga MX to Club Tijuana . There he caused a sensation when he bit his opponent Jesús Eduardo Zavala on the shoulder during the game in Tijuana's game against CF Monterrey in early April 2015 .

Change to the USA

In January 2016 it was announced that Arango was moving to New York Cosmos . He scored 16 goals in 31 games for Cosmos, won the North American Soccer League in 2016 and was named best player of the season.

Return home and end of career in New York

After the end of the season in the USA he returned to his homeland and to Zulia FC , for whom he scored twice in 15 games. In September 2017 he played three more times for Cosmos. In January 2018, Cosmos announced the end of its contract.

National team

Arango made his debut for the national team on January 27, 1999 in a friendly against Denmark . As the captain of the Venezuelan national team, he was voted the best Venezuelan footballer of all time in 2012. He has participated in every Copa America since 1999 . On June 7, 2013 Arango scored the 1-0 lead for Venezuela in a 1-1 draw in the qualifying game for the 2014 World Cup against Bolivia and drew level with Giancarlo Maldonado with his 22nd international goal . Five days later, he beat José Manuel Rey's national record with his 116th international match , and on November 18, 2014, he became the sole Venezuelan top scorer with his 23rd international goal. On September 9, 2015, he announced his retirement after his 129th international match. He held his record as a goalscorer until June 9, 2019, when he was outbid by Salomón Rondón .

Style of play

Above all, Arango impresses with his left foot. He is able to fire incredibly hard, but still very precise shots or high balls with his left foot. Even under distress he always has the need to find the way forward. With his sometimes unrestricted offensive football, he sometimes causes bad passes and ball losses. He has incredible technique and can hold up against an overwhelming number of opponents. In addition to a lack of defensive work and a weak sprint, his right foot is considered unusable in the game. Arango himself said, “nothing would work with the right foot, absolutely nothing. He would only need it to get into the car, accelerate and brake ”. His running weakness, which he was often accused of, was improved in Gladbach times. Also to be emphasized are his dangerous free kicks, which often lead to scoring, so that he does not need to shy away from a comparison with the world's best free kick takers.

Others

Juan Arango is also called "Arangol" in his Venezuelan homeland because of his goal threat. Another nickname is "El Huracán del caribe", which means "The hurricane of the Caribbean". Since the 2013/14 season he has been referred to by fans as the god of football at the team presentation before the home games in Mönchengladbach . He was voted the best Venezuelan player of all time and is one of the few players from his home country to have played in a top European league.
