Varginha , officially Portuguese Município de Varginha , is a city in the southwest of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais with an estimated population of 134,477 as of July 1, 2018 and an area of around 395 km².
In 2011, Veja magazine named Varginha “the medium-sized city in Brazil with the highest quality of life and the most favorable investment climate”, and in 2015 Semper Família magazine named the city seventh among the best cities in Minas Gerais.
geography
The city is strategically located near the Furnas Reservoir , while being equidistant from the three main metropolises of Brazil, São Paulo , Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte . The lowest point is at 868 m at the source of the Tijuco stream , the highest point is the mountain Morro do Chapéu at 1239 m. The municipality is 4% flat, 80% hilly and 16% mountainous.

The city has a tropical mountain climate (moderately warm), Cwa according to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification. The average temperature is 20.2 ° C. The average rainfall is 1400 mm per year. The summer in Varginha is much more humid than the winter.

history
On July 22, 1881, the village of Vila de Espírito Santo da Varginha was established, received city rights as a municipality on October 7, 1882 and was renamed Varginha in 1923 .
In 2017, the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística changed the assignment to geostatistical regions and assigned the municipality to the Região geográfica imediata Varginha and the Região geográfica intermediária Varginha .
UFO incident in 1996
On January 20, 1996, there was an alleged UFO incident in Varginha , which is still causing controversy in relevant discussion forums. As a reminder of this, the city's new water tower was built in the shape of a flying saucer and was named " Nave Espacial de Varginha ".

Varginha is known as one of the most important centers for coffee production of excellent quality (gourmet coffee), and the Brazilian center for global coffee exports.
Raw materials from the mines in southern Brazil and grain are also exported.
