Varginha , officially Portuguese Município de Varginha , is a city in the southwest of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais with an estimated population of 134,477 as of July 1, 2018 and an area of ​​around 395 km².

In 2011, Veja magazine named Varginha “the medium-sized city in Brazil with the highest quality of life and the most favorable investment climate”, and in 2015 Semper Família magazine named the city ​​seventh among the best cities in Minas Gerais.

The city is strategically located near the Furnas Reservoir , while being equidistant from the three main metropolises of Brazil, São Paulo , Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte . The lowest point is at 868 m at the source of the Tijuco stream , the highest point is the mountain Morro do Chapéu at 1239 m. The municipality is 4% flat, 80% hilly and 16% mountainous.

history

On July 22, 1881, the village of Vila de Espírito Santo da Varginha was established, received city rights as a municipality on October 7, 1882 and was renamed Varginha in 1923 .

In 2017, the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística changed the assignment to geostatistical regions and assigned the municipality to the Região geográfica imediata Varginha and the Região geográfica intermediária Varginha .
