Azul is a Brazilian low-cost airline based in Alphaville , São Paulo state . In 2013 the airline carried over 20 million passengers.

history

founding

Azul was founded on May 5th, 2008 by David Neeleman , the founder and former CEO of JetBlue . On November 10, 2008, flight operations were approved by the Brazilian Aviation Authority.

Flight operations began on December 15, 2008 with the Campinas - Salvador and Campinas - Porto Alegre scheduled services .

The name Azul means “blue” in Portuguese . A variant of this language is also spoken in Brazil. The name results from a competition that was announced by the founder.

Merger with TRIP Linhas Aéreas

On May 28, 2012, the merger of the airlines TRIP Linhas Aéreas and Azul Linhas Aéreas was announced. On March 6, 2013, the Brazilian authorities approved the merger. The new airline has been called Azul since then and is now the third largest airline in Brazil, after LATAM and Gol .

expansion

While Azul carried two million passengers in the first year of 2009, it was already 20 million in 2013 after the merger. This makes it one of the fastest growing airlines in the world. Azul initially grew primarily with the turboprops and Embraer regional jets on the domestic market and thus became the largest operator of an Embraer 195 fleet worldwide . In 2014, it expanded the fleet to include used long-haul aircraft of the type Airbus A330-200, with which routes to the USA were taken. On April 23, 2014, Azul announced that it had ordered six A330-200s and five Airbus A350-900s from Airbus for delivery over the next few years. On December 1, 2014, it was announced that Azul had ordered 35 A320neo . There are also leasing contracts for a further 28 aircraft from the A320neo family. As a result of the decline in the Brazilian economy in 2015 and 2016, the company abandoned the idea of using five Airbus A350-900s in March 2017.

Destinations

Azul serves a network of over 100 domestic destinations, including Aracaju , Belém , Belo Horizonte-Confins , Belo Horizonte -Pampulha, Brasília , Campinas , Campo Grande , Cuiabá , Curitiba , Fernando de Noronha , Florianópolis , Fortaleza , Foz do Iguaçu , Goiânia , João Pessoa , Londrina , Maceió , Manaus , Maringá , Natal , Palmas , Porto Alegre , Rio de Janeiro-Galeão , Rio de Janeiro-Santos Dumont , Recife , Salvador , São José dos Campos , São Luís , São Paulo-Congonhas , São Paulo- Guarulhos , Teresina and Vitória .
