Groß Steinum is a district of the town of Königslutter am Elm and is located on the southern slope of the Dorm in the Helmstedt district . Groß Steinum is about five kilometers northeast of the city center.

history

Apparently, Groß Steinum was built in the Saxon-Franconian period (501–900). A documented name was only given in 1226 with a stenum . The name Steinum was first mentioned from 1311. The name Groß Steinum mainly refers to the stony landscape (Wippstein and Bockshornklippe).

Since 1886 the church of St. Lorenz has stood in its current form as the core in the center of the round village, it belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran regional church in Braunschweig . Through the village renewal program from 1994 to 2001, Groß Steinum was able to renovate or maintain around 30 buildings and facilities. Ten buildings in the village are listed.

On March 1, 1974, Groß Steinum was incorporated into the town of Königslutter am Elm.

Great stone grave

Since 1950 there have been three large stone graves from the younger Stone Age from around 3500 BC. Around the village has been developed. Further excavations unearthed 18 megalithic stones from the underground, which consist of lignite quartzite and are apparently randomly distributed around the site. Under the stones there is also an almost 200 hundredweight capstone . The construction of the stone grave of Groß Steinum is similar to that of the Lübbensteine near Helmstedt . In the area of the stones, numerous bones and pottery shards were found that were dated to the more recent phase of deep-engraving ceramics . It can therefore be assumed that the burial chamber was built in an early phase of this culture, around 3500 to 3400 BC. Was built. A second, poorly preserved grave south-east of the village was opened in 1994, while a third, however, was destroyed by construction work. The adventure trail "Großsteingrab Groß Steinum" of the Open-Air and Adventure Museum Ostfalen (FEMO) leads around the fenugreek cliff. Here you can visit the so-called " Steinkammer von Groß Steinum ", a reconstructed megalithic tomb.

Groß Steinum has had two coats of arms since it became a district of Königslutter.

The old coat of arms showed a brown stone in silver on a green hill, the Wippstein. A silver pewter shield head is reminiscent of a fortified court of the Order of St. John .

On March 26, 1990, the local council adopted the new, modified coat of arms. It no longer shows the rocking stone, but the eight-pointed order cross of the Johanniter. The color scheme was changed to red and white following the example of the Johanniter. The wave bar in the lower part represents the river Schunter .
