The reconstructed stone chamber of Groß Steinum is located east of the road from Groß Steinum to Beienrode , exactly north of Groß Steinum in the Helmstedt district in Lower Saxony on the edge of the forest.

description

The chamber of the passage grave was built in 1960 at its current location from 16 stones, which were uncovered in 1951 in a field 200 meters away. In addition to the scattered stones, numerous bones and shards were found. In 1952 the stones were moved to the edge of the forest with the help of lifting trees, ropes and logs on a sledge pulled by a team of oxen. The experiment showed that it was possible to transport the stones with simple tools. The reconstruction was dared because of the cesspools observed in the former facility. There is no detailed excavation report that would convincingly justify the execution.

The long chamber of the funnel beaker culture (TBK) whose origin was between 3500 and 2800 BC. Can be dated BC, is formed by twelve bearing stones and covered by four mighty blocks (one weighs ten tons) made of brown coal - quartzites . A rare material, as the Lübbensteine show. Gang stones indicate the access on the north-eastern long side. Since 1950 three large stone graves have been opened around the village . The adventure trail "Großsteingrab Groß Steinum" of the Open-Air and Adventure Museum Ostfalen (FEMO) leads around the fenugreek cliff.

Say

Legends about giants and stones have survived around Groß Steinum. One tells of a giant king who is buried under a large stone at the dorm . If this refers to the reconstructed grave, it means that the legend has preserved the memory of the stone grave, which was perhaps only destroyed in the 19th century.
