Surname

Rotenkamp was first mentioned in a document in 1346. The name probably stands for a free field that was created by clearing . There are other villages in the vicinity that end in -rode, e.g. Beienrode .

Townscape

The core of Rotenkamp goes back to a round building with a chapel in the center, which was only accessible from the northwest. To this day, the origins of the Rundling can be seen particularly well in the cul-de-sac "Ackerwinkel", even if the low German hall houses were replaced by the Central German construction method due to changed management methods.

The further development since the 19th century connects to the south and north of the Rundling. In general, the development is concentrated along the local thoroughfare.

Also on the northern outskirts is the former station of Rotenkamp, which was on the Schandelah-Oebisfelde railway line . The line opened on October 10, 1902, has not been used for passenger traffic since 1975. Since then Rotenkamp has been connected to local public transport via buses. The station building is in good condition and has been renovated for residential use.
