Life

Haldor Ferdinand Jørgensen was the son of the politician Otto Frederik Christian Jørgensen (1808-1858) and his wife Charlotte Christine Emilie Tøxen (1810-1856). He visited the metropolitan cities and then studied theology from 1851 to 1855. He was ordained on April 25, 1855 . Two days later he married Ida Emilie Augusta Preisler (1837–1906), daughter of the court owner Georg Sophus Preisler (1791–1863) and his wife Susanne “Sanne” Michaeline Marie Dantzer (1800–1894) in Copenhagen. From the marriage, among others, the son Herjulf Carl Georg Jørgensen (1856-1911) emerged.

In the same year he was sent to Greenland, where, as usual, he initially worked as an assistant and seminar teacher. He taught Greenlandic with Carl Janssen and when he left Greenland in 1857, Jørgensen was instead head of Grønland's seminarium . In 1859 he hired Samuel Kleinschmidt at the seminary and both worked together on the further development of the Greenlandic language .

Because of his wife's poor health, Jørgensen returned to Denmark in 1869, where he became a Greenlandic lecturer, which he remained until his death. At the same time he was appointed pastor in Førslev Sogn in 1872. In 1881 he moved to Havdrup Sogn and Solrød Sogn . In 1902 he was retired. Since 1877 he was also Greenland advisor to the Ministry of Culture.

Haldor Ferdinand Jørgensen translated a textbook by Carl Frederik Balslev , edited the dictionary by Kleinschmidt, a revised Greenlandic psalms book, a ritual and an altar book. His most important work, however, was the revised translation of the Bible , which he carried out together with Jacob Kjer and Christian Rasmussen . The New Testament was completed in 1893 and the entire Bible in 1900.

In 1895 he was made a knight of the Order of Dannebrog . He died in his hometown in 1904 at the age of 74.
