The concept of replacement is historically associated in particular with the interruption of a layer of wooden beams or rafters . Those beams that are installed at right angles to the actual laying direction are referred to as alternation . Their job is to take loads and introduce them laterally.

Substitutions also occur in steel construction today . Ceiling panels made of prefabricated reinforced concrete elements can also be intercepted in the edge areas of openings with changes made of steel. In- situ concrete ceilings are also replaced with appropriate reinforcement in the area of ​​cutouts .

Timber construction

Replacements can occur in timber construction in layers of beams and rafters . Stairs often make it necessary to interrupt the beam position in the floor slab. Their edges must then be provided with one or more changes if necessary. Window openings in the rafter position of a roof can make it necessary to replace them. Often a chimney or its walling is surrounded by a change at least on one side. Those arm of a balance situation in which a change of ends with its end face, are also trimming joist called. They may have to be made larger.
