Pantanal Linhas Aéreas ceased operations in 2013. The information in italics refer to the last status before the end of operation.

Pantanal Linhas Aéreas SA was a Brazilian regional airline . It was taken over by TAM Linhas Aéreas on December 21, 2009 and fully integrated into the LATAM Airlines Group on August 23, 2013 .

history

The airline opened on April 12, 1993 in Campo Grande , Brazil , and began operations on the same day. It was established in 1992 after restrictive provisions were partially repealed. The company became the first Brazilian airline to introduce the ATR 42 aircraft in December 1993. In 1995 the company gained approval to transport Petrobras employees and cargo across the Amazon region.

TAM Linhas Aéreas took over Pantanal Linhas Aéreas on December 21, 2009. At this point, TAM decided to run Pantanal as an independent airline within the TAM Group, which was integrated into the network. However, as of August 1, 2011, all Pantanal flights were operated on behalf of TAM.

In 2010 the IATA code of Pantanal Linhas Aéreas was changed from P8 to GP. According to the National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil , Pantanal had a market share of 0.20 percent of domestic air traffic in August 2010 , based on the number of passengers per kilometer flown. Since September 2010, Pantanal no longer appears independently in statistics and the data was merged with those of the TAM Group, which includes TAM Airlines and Pantanal Linhas Aéreas. Between January and December 2012, the TAM Group had 40.79 percent of the domestic market share and 89.44 percent of international flights, based on the number of passengers per kilometer flown.

Destinations

In the end, Pantanal Linhas Aéreas served 19 destinations, mostly in southeastern Brazil. The bases of the company were the two airports of São Paulo, Congonhas and Guarulhos . For example, Belo Horizonte , Porto Alegre and Salvador da Bahia were approached .

Incidents

The Embraer EMB 120 crashed on March 3, 1997 ( registration number PT-MFC)

The company recorded three incidents in its history in which the aircraft had to be written off, but without any fatal consequences:

  • On March 3, 1997, an Embraer EMB 120 ( registration number PT-MFC) had an accident while approaching Vilhena Airport . The aircraft was flown by the first officer who was in training. During the approach, the copilot concentrated on the artificial horizon without paying attention to the altitude, while the commander and instructor kept an eye out for the airport. Due to a power failure , the city of Vilhena was invisible at night. The plane crashed into trees a kilometer from the runway and a fire broke out in the left engine that spread to the entire plane. All 16 people on board the aircraft were able to save themselves.
  • On March 16, 1999, an ATR 42-300 (registration number PT-MFI) with 14 people on board had an accident while approaching Mucuri Airport when a fire broke out in an engine. The crew were able to land the ATR 42 safely, but the aircraft was irreparably damaged by the spreading fire before the fire service brought the fire under control. All occupants could safely exit the machine.
  • On July 16, 2007, another ATR 42-300 (registration number PT-MFK) with 25 people on board had an accident while landing at São Paulo-Congonhas Airport , where the ATR 42 yawed to one side and got off the runway. While everyone on board survived, the aircraft was damaged beyond repair.
