Empresa de Transporte Aéreo & Companhia Limitada ( ETA acronym ) was a Brazilian airline founded in 1928. It ceased operations as early as 1929. The company is still well known among philatelists today, as it issued its own postage stamps for the transport of mail, which are now valuable collectibles.

history

Although the company was founded in 1928, the prehistory goes back further. In 1927, Ralph O'Neill wanted to set up an airmail service between the United States and South America. To this end, he made efforts on the one hand to set up a US airline on the main route and on the other hand to purchase or found local airlines to take over the feeder and distribution flights.

With this in mind, O'Neill contacted Ruy Vacani and the brothers Benjamin and Alexandre Braga, who were just setting up their own airline. The contact did not lead to a contract, because O'Neill did not agree to the financial aspects of a merger, nor could Vacani and the Braga brothers show exclusive rights to carry mail on the planned routes, as O'Neill requested.

Both ventures continued their plans, and while O'Neill was building the New York, Rio, and Buenos Aires Line (NYRBA), Vacani and the Braga brothers founded the Empresa de Transporte Aéreo & Companhia Limitada on August 10, 1928. On March 1, 1929, ETA was granted the concession for commercial flights over Brazilian territory. However, the Brazilian government refused to grant the company exclusive rights to the flight routes. It was planned to fly mail on the routes from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo , to Campos dos Goytacazes and to Belo Horizonte . Airplanes with wheeled undercarriages should be used for this, which was still unusual in Brazil at the time.

The first flight took off on July 30, 1929 from Rio de Janeiro-Manguinhos Airport to São Paulo-Campo de Marte Airport and took 3 hours and 45 minutes.

In order to further expand the company, the owners of ETA contacted the director of NYRBA, who agreed to sell aircraft but also wanted to buy the entire airline in return. The purchase agreement was signed on August 13, 1929 and a small portion of the sales price was paid. The contract was never officially recorded, had incorrect clauses and was therefore invalid under Brazilian law. Furthermore, the ETA was not in possession of the exclusive rights to their routes, which was expressly requested by O'Neill. For these reasons, he revoked the contract and declared the agreements null and void. Years of litigation resulted.

Vacani and the Braga brothers lost interest in the aviation company and ceased operations on November 16, 1929. They sold the machines registered under P-BBAC and P-BBAD to Varig . There are no records of the whereabouts of the third, P-BBAA registered aircraft.

In 1947 Ruy Vacani founded another airline, the Lóide Aéreo Nacional .
