The company's main location is Ipatinga , 217 km east of Belo Horizonte. Usiminas also operates a research laboratory there and filed the second most patent in Brazil between 1992 and 2008.

In September 2009, Usinas Siderurgicas de Minas Gerais SA (Usiminas) placed an order with the international technology group Andritz for the delivery of a continuous pickling system with acid regeneration for hot-rolled carbon steel for the Cubatão plant. In addition, Andritz will supply Unigal, a joint venture between Usiminas (70%) and Nippon Steel (30%), a rewinding and inspection line for hot-dip galvanized carbon steel strip for the Ipatinga plant.
