Zell Castle

The castle cell is an Outbound hilltop castle southeast of the Hohenzollern at the northern escarpment of Zeller horn at 685  m above sea level. NN near the Hechingen district of Boll in the Zollernalbkreis in Baden-Württemberg .

The castle was built before 1255 by the taverns of Zell and mentioned in 1255 with a Werner von Zell. The lords of Zell were the ancestors of the famous noble family von Stauffenberg . Long before the Zollern counts took possession of the mountain, the land around the Zollerberg was the property of the Lords of Zell. It is believed that Zell was the original name of the Stauffenberger. Since the Stauffenbergers held the hereditary gift office with the Count of Zollern, “Schenk” became part of their surname.

In 1439 the castle was already a stable . Nothing of the former castle has survived and the associated settlement was abandoned in the 14th to 15th centuries. The pilgrimage church of Maria Zell stands on the site of the castle today .
